How to Prevent Tooth Enamel Loss

Enamel protects your teeth against bacteria. This hard layer coats your teeth and works to keep those microscopic enemies away from the inner pulp of each tooth.

But as tough as enamel is, some foods and habits can erode it. Learn what you can do to prevent enamel loss.

Limit Sugary Foods and Drinks

Foods and drinks with high sugar content help feed the bacteria in your mouth. Too much bacteria in your mouth will wear down and soften enamel. Choose options with less sugar or with artificial sweeteners.

Use Fluoride

Fluoride helps to repair tooth decay as well as to strengthen weakened enamel. It can also help your teeth become more resistant to acidic drinks and foods. Choose a toothpaste that contains fluoride to prevent tooth enamel loss.

Don’t Overbrush

Although brushing your teeth is essential, overbrushing can damage enamel. Use a brush that has soft bristles, and make sure to hold it at a 45-degree angle. Brush gently in small circles and don’t forget to touch the gums, too.

Stop Grinding Your Teeth

Grinding or clenching your teeth can significantly damage enamel. If you tend to grind your teeth at night, consult your dentist about getting a nightguard. You can wear this nightguard while you sleep to prevent your upper and lower teeth from grinding together. Try to catch day time clenching or squeezing of the teeth which can be harmful to your teeth, jaw bone, and jaw joints.

Get Regular Checkups

Seeing your dentist regularly is one of the best things you can do to prevent enamel loss. Your dentist will assess your oral health and may prescribe a dental cleaning specific for your individual needs. Having regular checkups can also help catch issues early. Your dentist can offer personalized tips to help you avoid enamel loss.
