Effective Ways to Deal With Dental-Related Anxiety

Thousands of Americans feel nervous about visiting the dentist. According to the Journal of Dental Hygiene, between 50 and 80% of adult patients experience mild to severe dental anxiety, putting themselves at risk for developing potentially serious oral health problems.

If you have a dental phobia, there are things you can do to manage your anxiety and become more comfortable at the dentist’s office.

1. Take Someone You Trust to Your Appointment

Bringing a friend or family member to your appointment can make you more comfortable. This support can help ease your fears and calm you during your appointment.

2. Use Distractions

Distractions often work well for children in many situations, but they can also be helpful for adults at the dentist. A distraction may be as simple as listening to your favorite music in your headphones or watching television facing the chair. These noises disguise sounds and help you feel relaxed.

3. Practice Mental Conditioning

Having the right mindset before arriving at the office can help you prepare for your visit. Making time to practice controlled breathing, meditation, or yoga before your appointment can put your mind at ease.

You can also speak with our dentist beforehand to learn about sedation dentistry.  Medication may be an option to help manage your anxiety as well as speaking about your specific fears.

4. Find the Right Dentist

Finding a dentist that aligns with your values and can meet your needs makes a difference. Scheduling with the right office will make you more comfortable about your upcoming treatment. Look for a team with a friendly staff, positive reviews, and customized treatment that can accommodate your needs.

I've been a patient of Dr. Piper's for the last 19 years so it's very obvious that I've been a very very satisfied patient. I had an excellent full check-up today with x-rays and everything was perfect. Perfect because I've been going consistently and following their experts on dental care, cleaning and good health! Bravo 👏 👏 👏
