Cavities are a concern for patients of any age, and most people will need at least one filling at some point in their lives. But, did you know that there are dental treatments available to help prevent tooth decay?
A popular treatment is a dental sealant, which is a non-invasive approach to safeguarding the tooth. A dental sealant can protect the tooth from cavity-causing bacteria when decay isn’t present.
What Are Dental Sealants?
Sealants are a type of dental material used to cover the deep grooves in teeth and prevent decay. Sealants are made from thin plastic that bonds to the surface of the tooth being treated. Most commonly, molars and premolars are treated with a dental sealant as they are more susceptible to tooth decay.
Sealants can prevent cavities or treat ongoing decay when placed over an existing hole to prevent further deterioration. After the material has been applied, food debris and leftovers won’t get stuck between teeth or on surfaces.
Who Can Get Sealants?
Sealants are available for anyone wishing to prevent decay on their teeth. However, they are often recommended for kids aged between 6 and 14.
Your first molars typically break through around age 6, while your second molars appear around age 12. Most dentists recommend placing sealants on these teeth once they are fully erupted to begin protecting them and prevent sensitivity.
How Is a Sealant Applied?
Sealants are applied during a pain-free procedure that can be completed relatively quickly in this manner:
- The tooth is cleaned and dried
- An acidic gel is used to roughen up the tooth’s surface, making it easier for the sealant to stick to the tooth
- The gel is rinsed away, and the tooth is cleaned and dried again
- The liquid sealant material is applied
- Specialized blue light is used to harden it
With proper care and regular checkups, a dental sealant could last up to 10 years!
